If you plan on killing lords, it's actually easier to play with 0 towns. Just run across the map and kill them off one by one. I only found the option to 'Leave Kingdom' or to speak to the ruler of the faction but both will lead to a massive -40 reputation hit (going from 20 to -20) when doing so. Seems like, right now, the game is handling being a mercenary just as being a vassal, what's a bit odd in my opinion.
