Lost Coast was initially created as a section in the Highway 17 chapter of Half-Life 2. After being cut from the game it was later released as a tech demo to showcase HDR lighting in the Source engine. Essentially a tech demo, “Half-Life 2: Lost Coast” sole purpose was to show off the new high-dynamic-range-rendering of the Source engine, it was a welcome addition to the franchise.
